The recent resignations of high-profile female leaders, the anti-Amber Heard cyberbullying operation after her trial against Johnny Depp and the mass harassment of female rights activists have one common thread: the use of gendered disinformation campaigns that are often monetized by digital platforms. The global phenomenon risks not only discouraging women from participating in politics, but also threatens democratic institutions. Erin Ogunkeye speaks to gender equality expert Lucina Di Meco, who spearheaded a report on the patterns and motives driving the attacks. We also take a look at growing cases of rape and sexual abuse at a displacement camp in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
