Alexei Navalny
The death of 47-year-old Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on February 16, 2024, further diminished a rapidly shrinking Russian opposition that has seen its members assassinated, sentenced to lengthy prison terms or forced into exile. Imprisoned since 2021 on charges he maintained were politically motivated, Navalny was sentenced in 2023 to 19 additional years behind bars and was serving time at an Arctic Circle penal colony when he died.
